The Aquarium Solutions Sponge Filter (by Hikari) is a classic air-driven sponge filter — one of the most reliable, gentle, and shrimp-safe forms of filtration there is. Connected to an air pump, it draws water through a porous sponge that provides both mechanical filtration (trapping debris) and a huge surface area for the beneficial bacteria that run your biofilter. The gentle flow and total lack of an intake slot make it the standard choice for shrimp tanks, fry tanks, betta tanks, and quarantine.
Good to Know: Sponge filters are beloved for shrimp and fry because nothing small can be sucked in — the sponge itself becomes a grazing surface covered in biofilm that baby shrimp feed on. How to Use: Connect to an air pump (and ideally a check valve), submerge, and let it run. Rinse the sponge in old tank water during water changes — never tap water, which kills the bacteria.
