aquaLife Andisol is a professional planted-tank substrate made in Japan from nutrient-rich volcanic ash (andisol). It's an active aquasoil: it feeds plant roots directly, encourages rapid growth and strong color, and fosters the beneficial microbial activity in the root zone that a thriving planted tank depends on. The porous granules give roots an excellent anchor and a huge surface for beneficial bacteria.
Good to Know: Because it's an active soil, Andisol naturally softens and acidifies your water and helps keep ammonia in check as a tank establishes — which is exactly why it's so well suited to planted aquascapes and to dwarf shrimp like crystals and Taiwan bees that want soft, acidic water. It comes in black or brown, in fine (~3 mm) and coarse (~5 mm) granules, and conveniently requires no rinsing before use.
How Much You Need: aquaLife's guide: length × width × desired depth (in inches) ÷ 60 = liters needed. Add it to the empty tank, then fill slowly over a dish to avoid disturbing the bed. It pairs naturally with a remineralizer for shrimp, since active soil pulls KH down.
