The API Phosphate Test Kit measures phosphate (PO₄), a nutrient that builds up from fish food and waste and is a well-known contributor to algae problems. For anyone fighting persistent algae — or running a planted tank where phosphate is also a needed plant nutrient — knowing your phosphate level takes the guesswork out of diagnosing what's feeding the green.
This liquid test reads phosphate accurately across a useful range and is good for around 150 tests. It's a diagnostic many hobbyists overlook until an algae outbreak forces the question, at which point it quickly pays for itself.
Good to Know: Phosphate is a balancing act, not a "lower is always better" number — in a planted tank, plants need some phosphate, and starving them can cause its own problems. The goal is to understand the level so you can balance plant nutrition against algae control, rather than to drive it to zero.
How to Use: Fill the tube to the line, add the specified drops of phosphate reagent, cap and shake, wait the stated time, and match to the chart. Test when troubleshooting algae, when establishing a planted dosing routine, or to check phosphate in your source water.
