API Nitrate Test Kit
The API Nitrate Test Kit measures nitrate (NO₃), the end product of the nitrogen cycle. Nitrate is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but it accumulates steadily between water changes, and a high level signals a buildup of waste and organics — poor long-term water quality that stresses fish and, importantly for aquascapers, fuels nuisance algae. Tracking nitrate is really how you decide when and how much water to change.
This liquid test is the reliable way to read nitrate (strips are notoriously imprecise for it), with enough reagent for around ninety tests. For planted-tank keepers it does double duty: nitrate is also a key plant nutrient, so the test helps you judge whether your tank is nutrient-rich or running lean.
Good to Know: The nitrate test has one quirky but crucial step — the second reagent bottle must be shaken hard for a good 30 seconds, and the capped tube shaken vigorously for a full minute, or you'll get a falsely low reading. This is the most common reason people distrust their nitrate results.
How to Use: Fill the tube to the line, add the drops from bottle #1, then add bottle #2 (shake that bottle vigorously first), cap and shake the tube hard for a full minute, wait the stated time, and match to the chart. Check periodically and before water changes to dial in your maintenance schedule.
