Vampire Crab
Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) is a vividly colored, semi-terrestrial crab from the rivers and forest streams of Java, Indonesia, prized for its striking purple body and contrasting yellow eyes. Despite the dramatic name, Vampire Crabs are entirely harmless to humans and other animals — the name comes from their nocturnal habits and dramatic coloration, not from any aggressive behavior. Officially documented in the hobby only since 2006, this is still a relatively new and somewhat mysterious addition to the freshwater trade, but it has quickly become a favorite among hobbyists building paludariums and terrarium-style setups.
In their water area, Vampire Crabs need only a few inches of clean, dechlorinated water — but it must be kept meticulously clean, as this species is sensitive to poor water quality. The land area should include moisture-retentive substrate, live plants, and climbing structures like driftwood, rocks, or cork bark, along with a humidity level of 75% or higher to keep the crab healthy and active. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as Vampire Crabs are accomplished escape artists.
Vampire Crabs are social and do best kept in small groups, though males can be territorial toward one another — a ratio of one male to two or more females is recommended to reduce conflict. They are not compatible with other species of semi-terrestrial crab, which they treat as competition, and fish tankmates are not generally recommended, as Vampire Crabs may prey on small or slow-moving fish given the opportunity. They are, however, considered safe for live plants, which they will help keep clean of algae and debris.
Like other crustaceans, Vampire Crabs molt periodically to grow — during this time they are vulnerable and often hide. Stable water and humidity parameters are essential to successful molting; fluctuations are one of the leading causes of stress and health issues in this species.
