Description

Thai Micro Crab

Thai Micro Crab (Limnopilos naiyanetri) is one of the smallest and most remarkable invertebrates in the freshwater hobby — a fully aquatic crab found in only one place on Earth, a single river system in Thailand. At just 5mm across the carapace, with a leg span reaching about an inch, this delicate, semi-translucent crab resembles a tiny spider as it clings to plants, moss, and driftwood. Unlike the vast majority of crabs, the Thai Micro Crab never needs to leave the water — it lives, feeds, molts, and goes about its entire life fully submerged, making it a true nano aquarium and planted tank resident rather than a paludarium animal.

⚠ Copper Warning: Copper is fatal to this species, just as it is to shrimp — even trace amounts. Never use copper-based medications or treatments in any aquarium housing Thai Micro Crabs. Check all fish medications carefully before use.
⚠ Flow Requirement: Thai Micro Crabs must have a gentle current directed toward their chosen perch — without it, they cannot catch enough food and will slowly starve even in a tank with plenty of food in the water column. Position a filter outlet, powerhead, or airstone so a gentle flow passes over a perch (driftwood, dense plant growth, or moss) where the crab can post up and filter feed.
Feeding & Care Tip: As a true filter feeder, the Thai Micro Crab cannot eat standard pellet or wafer foods dropped on the substrate — it needs fine particles suspended in the water column where its fan-like appendages can catch them. GlasGarten Bacter AE and GlasGarten Shrimp Baby Food are ideal — both create a cloud of micro-particles in the current that the crab will actively filter feed on. Dose these near the flow source the crab is using rather than across the whole tank for the best feeding response.

Thai Micro Crabs are extremely peaceful and entirely safe with dwarf shrimp — they pose no threat to Neocaridina, Caridina, or any other small tankmate, and make an excellent addition to a mature, densely planted shrimp tank. Dense plant growth, mosses, and fine root systems are not just decoration for this species — they are essential structure that the crab anchors to while filter feeding, and a tank without enough of this kind of cover will leave the crab without anywhere to successfully feed. Like the Bamboo and Vampire Shrimp, they do best in established, mature aquariums with adequate suspended organic particulate, and they pair extremely well with both of those species since all three share the same flow and feeding requirements.

These crabs are tiny, shy, and easy to overlook in a busy planted tank — patience is rewarded, as they will become more visible once settled into a secure, well-planted environment. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, as this species is sensitive to water quality, and avoid keeping them with any fish large enough to see them as a snack.
