Iriri Gold Nugget Pleco (L177)
Iriri Gold Nugget Pleco (L177)
Iriri Gold Nugget Pleco (L177) (Baryancistrus xanthellus) is the Rio Iriri locality form of the Gold Nugget — same species as L018 but collected from the Rio Iriri tributary. Locality collectors distinguish this population from the main Xingu form. Baryancistrus plecos are large, omnivorous loricariids that accept both algae-based and protein foods — more flexible feeders than the strictly carnivorous Hypancistrus group.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Mini Algae Wafers and Hikari Sinking Wafers make excellent staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and blanched vegetables. Driftwood presence is beneficial.
Native to fast-flowing, rocky rivers of the Amazon basin. Requires strong flow, high oxygenation, and warm water. Sensitive to high nitrates — regular water changes important.
Singly or in pairs in large aquariums — these grow substantially and need space. Cave spawner with male brood care.
Large, impressive plecos with striking patterns. Plan for adult size from the beginning — most Baryancistrus reach 10+ inches.
