Hornwort
Hornwort
Hornwort, botanically Ceratophyllum demersum, is one of the most widely distributed and adaptable aquatic plants on Earth — a cosmopolitan, rootless, free-floating stem plant found on every continent except Antarctica. Its exceptional hardiness, extraordinary adaptability, and genuinely impressive nutrient uptake capacity have made it a staple of the aquarium hobby across every fishkeeping tradition and culture worldwide. Few aquatic plants are as universally known or as practically dependable.
Care tip: Hornwort is a floating plant that grows on the water surface without substrate. Avoid strong surface agitation and thin regularly to prevent complete surface coverage. Temperatures between 59–86°F support healthy growth.
Growing to 24 inches or more, Hornwort can be planted loosely in the substrate or left to float freely — it has no true roots and anchors only loosely when planted. As a floater it grows most vigorously, creating natural fry cover and shade. It grows at an extraordinary speed under any reasonable conditions, making it one of the fastest and most effective natural nutrient absorbers in any aquarium. It can be trimmed to any length and the trimmings simply removed.
This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows under virtually any lighting from low to high. The extraordinary temperature range of 59 to 86°F reflects its genuine cosmopolitan adaptability. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions — though Hornwort tolerates even wider parameter ranges. Regular trimming manages the rapid growth.
In the aquascape, Hornwort provides fast, reliable, natural background coverage or floating surface management with exceptional nutrient absorption capacity. It is most commonly used in fry tanks, breeding tanks, shrimp tanks, and new aquariums where rapid nutrient uptake and natural cover are immediately beneficial. Its extraordinary adaptability makes it a universal problem-solver in the aquarium hobby.
Hornwort is the ultimate universally adaptable aquarium plant — hardy, fast-growing, and practically useful in virtually any freshwater setup. Its cosmopolitan nature and extraordinary resilience make it the go-to species for aquarists who need reliable, immediate green coverage with natural nutrient management.
