Jade Mystery Snail
- In stock, ready to ship
Jade Mystery Snail (Pomacea bridgesii) displays a green-tinted jade shell — a cool, earthy green that is unusual and attractive in planted aquariums. Mystery Snails are one of the most popular and beginner-friendly freshwater invertebrates available — peaceful, actively visible, and available in a wide range of shell colors. They are excellent algae and detritus cleaners, and their large, rounded shells and distinctive trapdoor make them one of the most recognizable snails in the hobby.
Native to South America — Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, and Brazil — where they inhabit rivers, swamps, and ponds scavenging plant matter and algae from the substrate. Pomacea bridgesii is the most popular mystery snail in the hobby specifically because, unlike some of its larger apple snail relatives, it is completely plant-safe — it will not eat healthy living plants, making it ideal for planted aquariums. The name 'mystery snail' originated from the seemingly mysterious ability of these snails to seal themselves inside their shell with a trapdoor (operculum) and disappear for days, only to reappear perfectly healthy.
Mystery Snails breathe both through gills and a lung — they regularly extend a breathing siphon to the water surface to take in air. Always leave an air gap between the water surface and the lid. They are also accomplished climbers and escape artists — Glasgarten SnailSafe applied to the tank rim is strongly recommended. Mystery Snails cannot self-fertilize and require both male and female to breed. Eggs are laid in distinctive pink-coral clutches above the waterline and are easy to identify and remove if breeding control is desired.
