Banana Plant

Banana Plant, known botanically as Nymphoides aquatica, is one of the most charming and recognizable aquarium plants in the hobby — instantly identifiable by its cluster of green, banana-shaped tuberous roots that sit at the base of the plant like a tiny bunch of bananas. These distinctive tubers are the plant's energy storage organs and are as visually appealing as any part of the plant itself. From this unique base, the plant produces round, lily-pad-like leaves on long petioles.

Care tip: Banana Plant grows best in moderate lighting with CO₂ not required. Maintain temperatures of 68–82°F and pH 6.0–7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and best coloration.

Growing to 6 to 12 inches, Banana Plant is a foreground to midground plant whose compact size and unique tuber base make it a natural conversation piece in any aquarium. Over time the plant may send stems to the surface producing floating lily-like leaves — a charming feature noted in the care chart that adds surface interest to open-top tanks. The banana-shaped tubers should never be buried in substrate, as exposing them allows the plant to display its most distinctive feature.

This easy plant grows well under medium lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 68 and 82°F reflect the broad tolerance of this North American native species, which originates from the southeastern United States. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. Root tabs placed near the tubers support healthy growth, as the plant is a moderate root feeder.

In the aquascape, Banana Plant creates an immediate focal point as a foreground to midground accent whose unusual tuber formation draws the eye and prompts questions from every visitor to the aquarium. Its round leaves and floating potential add variety to layouts that might otherwise be dominated by typical stem and rosette plants. It is also a genuine favorite in shrimp tanks, where the broad leaves and tubers provide ideal grazing and resting surfaces.

Banana Plant is one of the most endearing and distinctive plants in the freshwater hobby. Its banana-shaped tubers, easy care, and charming growth habit make it a beloved addition to any planted aquarium.
