Anubias gracilis

Anubias gracilis is a slender, elegant Anubias species from Africa, growing to 8 to 12 inches with a notably open, airy structure. The care chart describes it as having broad, rounded leaves on a smooth shape well suited to wood or rock attachment — a characterization that captures both the simplicity and the natural grace of this species. It is a plant of quiet botanical authority.

Planting tip: Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias gracilis should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

Care for Anubias gracilis follows the same low-maintenance principles of all Anubias. It adapts well to low lighting, requires no CO₂ supplementation, and grows comfortably in temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Liquid fertilization supports the health of the long-petioled leaves and ensures steady, consistent growth. The slow growth rate typical of Anubias means the plant maintains its graceful open form without becoming unruly.

Anubias gracilis should be attached to driftwood or stone with the rhizome fully exposed above the substrate. The long petioles of this species display beautifully when the plant is positioned on elevated or angled hardscape where the leaves can spread freely at different heights and angles, creating a naturally graceful arrangement.

In the aquascape, Anubias gracilis contributes an open, dynamic structure that contrasts effectively with dense, compact plants. Its leaf form creates interesting architectural lines, particularly when planted alongside mosses, ferns, and lower-growing foreground plants. In African biotope tanks, it is an appropriate and attractive species companion to many native fish. A botanically beautiful and practically excellent plant for aquariums where natural grace is valued.
