Ooia Grabowskii is the type species of Ooia, a genus formally described only in 2010 by Wong and Boyce, split out from the related genus Piptospatha as part of an ongoing revision of Bornean stream aroids. Endemic to Borneo (recorded from the South Meratus Mountains among other sites), it's a small to medium evergreen rheophytic herb with elongate, lance-shaped to elliptic leaves, growing directly in or beside fast-flowing streams and waterfalls.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: As a true rheophyte, this species wants constant moisture and strong water movement around its roots — a paludarium or bog-style setup with running or frequently changed water works far better than a standard pot.
Give it deep shade to low, filtered light, a mineral, fast-draining substrate kept constantly wet, and warm, stable temperatures. Ooia is genuinely unique within its tribe for a botanical curiosity: the entire flower spike (spadix) stays fresh and intact right through fruit maturation, a persistence not seen elsewhere in the family.
Named for Malaysian botanist Ooi Im Hin, this genus represents a genuinely recent taxonomic discovery — a good pick for collectors interested in the cutting edge of Bornean aroid stream specialists.
