Description
Monstera Adansonii Variegated
Monstera Adansonii, commonly called the Swiss Cheese Vine, was described in 1830 by Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott and is native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It's a delicate, scrambling vine — smaller and more compact than its famous relative Monstera deliciosa — with oval, hole-dotted leaves. This variegated form carries additional white to cream patches across the foliage, a naturally occurring or selectively propagated trait within the species.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species likes slightly more moisture and humidity than its Monstera relatives — keep the soil evenly moist rather than letting it dry out fully between waterings.
Give it bright, indirect light — variegated types need more light than plain green forms to maintain their pattern rather than reverting to solid green, a chunky, well-draining aroid mix, and a moss pole or trellis if you want it to climb rather than trail — it does well either way. As with all Monstera, avoid direct sun, which will scorch the leaves.
A genus favorite for smaller spaces — this species delivers the classic "Swiss cheese" fenestrated look in a far more compact, manageable form than a full-sized Monstera deliciosa.
