Description
Alocasia Reversa
Alocasia Reversa was described by N.E. Brown in 1890 and is native to Sarawak, Borneo, growing in forest over limestone, often on boulders, up to about 300 meters. Its species name refers to a genuinely unusual variegation pattern: rather than the typical pale veins over a darker leaf, this species shows the reverse — a dark blue-green midrib zone bordered by shimmering silver-green margins.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Growing naturally on limestone boulders, this species doesn't want heavy, constant watering — let the top 2–3 cm dry before rewatering rather than keeping it saturated.
This is a compact species, reaching only about 30–35 cm tall, with a condensed, clumping rhizome and semi-glossy, leathery, ovate-to-sagittate leaves. Unlike some jewel Alocasia, its color contrast tends to stay stable as the plant matures rather than fading. Give it bright indirect light (never direct sun), consistent but not excessive moisture, and good drainage reflecting its limestone-boulder habitat.
A genuine, unhybridized Bornean species with a pattern unlike almost anything else in the genus — the sort of plant that rewards collectors specifically seeking taxonomic authenticity over trade-named hybrids.
