Watersprite (siliquosa)
Watersprite (siliquosa)
Watersprite siliquosa is a species of aquatic fern with more elongated, less divided fronds than the more common Ceratopteris thalictroides — producing a more linear, less feathery leaf form that creates a distinct visual character from standard Watersprite. Fast-growing and versatile, it excels at nutrient uptake from the water column and provides excellent natural cover for shrimp and fry with its dense, branching stem structure.
Planting tip: Watersprite (siliquosa) should be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome or roots fully exposed — never buried in substrate. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Watersprite species, siliquosa can be grown both planted in substrate and floating freely at the surface. Floating growth is typically faster and more vigorous, as the leaves have direct access to light and CO₂ at the water surface. Planted growth creates more structured background planting but the same nutrient-uptake benefits apply in both growing modes. The plant propagates readily through plantlets that develop on mature fronds.
Watersprite siliquosa grows in moderate lighting with CO₂ optional. Temperatures between 68 and 82°F and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. As a fast grower, it benefits from regular fertilization to support continuous new frond production. The nutrient-absorbing capacity of this plant makes it particularly useful for managing excess nutrients in new or unbalanced planted setups.
In the aquascape, Watersprite siliquosa provides fast, flexible background or floating coverage with natural shrimp and fry shelter. Its elongated frond form creates slightly different texture from standard thalictroides Watersprite, offering useful variation when both species are used together. The dense structure of a floating Watersprite colony creates a natural, dappled light effect throughout the aquarium.
Watersprite siliquosa is a fast, flexible, and genuinely useful aquatic fern for both practical nutrient management and natural aesthetic coverage. Its adaptable growing modes and natural shelter-providing qualities make it a valuable addition to any planted aquarium.
