Description

Lamprologus brevis Shell Dweller

Lamprologus brevis Shell Dweller (Lamprologus brevis, also sold as Neolamprologus brevis — both names refer to the same fish, taxonomists disagree on the genus) is a small, stocky cichlid with a distinctive blunt, bulldog-like face from the rocky-to-sandy transition zones of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. What makes this species genuinely unusual is its housing behavior: a male and female pair will share the same empty snail shell as both home and breeding site — a trait that's unusual even among other shell-dwelling cichlids, most of which keep separate shells.

Native to the intermediate zone of Lake Tanganyika where rock gives way to open sand, this species needs an aquarium that replicates that exact setup: a soft sand substrate (essential — coarse gravel can injure the delicate body and prevents the digging behavior this species relies on) and a generous offering of empty snail shells, at minimum 2–3 per pair. Escargot shells are readily accepted and widely available. Avoid shells with tight, narrow spirals where a fish could become trapped.

Feeding & Care Tip: This is a genuinely carnivorous species — for ideal condition and breeding success, feed primarily live or frozen meaty foods: daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms. Dry foods like cichlid pellets and flakes are acceptable as a supplement, but should not make up the bulk of the diet, especially for wild-caught specimens, which often refuse dry food outright. Round out the diet with occasional spirulina-based pellets, a pea, or a small piece of spinach for plant matter.

This species is monogamous — a true rarity among shell dwellers — and pairs form easily and hold a small territory of just a few square inches around their shared shell. A pair can be successfully bred in as little as a 5-gallon tank, though a 10–20 gallon tank gives more flexibility and allows for the occasional scuffle without serious injury. Reduce water changes to every 2–3 weeks once a pair has settled and is showing signs of breeding — frequent disturbance is one of the most common reasons a pair fails to spawn or fry are lost.

Hard, alkaline water is the genuine ideal for this species, mirroring Lake Tanganyika's unique chemistry — soft or acidic water is a real source of stress and poor health long-term, not just a less attractive condition. Use crushed coral or aragonite sand to help maintain the needed hardness and pH naturally.

Care & Ideal Parameters

Difficulty Easy once water chemistry is correct
Temperament Territorial only around its shell — peaceful elsewhere in the tank
Typical Adult Size Males to 2.2 in (5.5 cm); females noticeably smaller, to about 1.6 in (4 cm)
Recommended Setup Pair per 5–10 gallons minimum; 2–3 empty shells per pair
Ideal Temp 77–80°F (25–27°C)
Ideal pH 7.8–9.0 — hard, alkaline water is the true ideal, not a tolerance
Ideal GH 12–20+ dGH
Substrate Soft sand essential — required for digging and shell-burying behavior
Primary Food Live/frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms
Supplemental Food Cichlid pellets/flake, occasional spirulina or vegetable matter
Origin Lake Tanganyika, East Africa — rock-to-sand transition zones
Notes Monogamous — pair shares one shell, unusual among shell dwellers. Avoid gravel; soft sand only. Minimize water changes during breeding.
