Hairy Pufferfish
Hairy Pufferfish (Pao baileyi) is one of the most striking and unusual freshwater puffers in the hobby — a patient, intelligent ambush predator covered in tiny skin filaments called cirri that break up its outline against rocks and gravel, giving it the camouflaged, almost mossy appearance that earns its common name. Endemic to the rocky rapids and rocky-bottomed reaches of the Mekong River and its larger tributaries in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, this fish spends much of its time motionless among stones, waiting for prey to wander too close.
Feeding & Care Tip — This Is Not Optional: The single most important thing about feeding this species correctly is providing hard-shelled prey regularly — freshwater snails (pond snails, ramshorn, etc.), crayfish, and crab. Puffer teeth never stop growing, and without something to grind them down, the teeth overgrow to the point the fish can no longer eat at all, which is a real and common cause of death in captive puffers. Shelled food isn't a treat here — it is the core of the correct diet. Supplement with fresh or frozen prawn, mussel, and worms. Avoid live feeder fish — once a puffer learns to hunt live prey, it often becomes fixated and refuses prepared foods, leading to feeding problems down the line. Start training onto fresh/frozen food immediately rather than ever offering live fish.
Provide a mature aquarium with a soft sandy substrate and plenty of rock caves and crevices for this fish to wedge itself into — this mimics its natural ambush behavior and reduces stress significantly. Moderate to strong, highly oxygenated water flow matches its native rocky-rapids habitat. Strong filtration is essential, as this is a messy, voracious eater that produces significant waste.
This species can change color dramatically depending on mood and surroundings, and shows reduced cirri as it ages — juveniles under about 1.2 inches show none at all, with more developing as the fish matures (males are believed to develop more pronounced cirri than females). Handle with extreme care during tank maintenance; never lift this fish out of water, as puffers can gulp air when stressed and may struggle to expel it again.
Care & Ideal Parameters
| Difficulty | Advanced — not a beginner fish |
| Temperament | Extremely aggressive — solitary or species-only pairs at most |
| Typical Adult Size | Up to 4.7 inches (12 cm) |
| Recommended Stocking | 1 per tank, or a bonded pair with a backup divider/tank ready |
| Minimum Tank Size | 30 gallons |
| Ideal Temp | 73–82°F (23–28°C) |
| Ideal pH | 6.7–7.4 |
| Ideal GH/KH | 4–20°N water hardness |
| Primary Food | Live freshwater snails, crayfish, crab — essential for dental health, not a supplement |
| Supplemental Food | Fresh/frozen prawn, mussel, worms — never live feeder fish |
| Origin | Mekong River mainstream and larger tributaries — Thailand, Laos, Cambodia |
| Notes | Scaleless — extremely medication-sensitive. Tooth overgrowth is a real risk without regular shelled food. Never keep with any tankmates. Cirri increase with age, more pronounced in males. |
