Guyana Red Dragon Angelfish
Guyana Red Dragon Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare var. Essequibo) is a true wild-form color morph, not a selectively bred domestic strain — first collected from and named for the Essequibo River in Guyana. The body shows a silver base liberally covered in vivid red spots and freckles, especially concentrated toward the head, overlaid with deep, almost painted-on black vertical stripes. The red coloration shifts subtly with the angle of light, appearing more orange in some lighting and more cherry-red or black-red in others — a phenomenon also seen in red-spotted Green Discus.
This wild form occurs naturally alongside unspotted individuals in the same rivers — the spotting is not a separate species, sex, or strict local variant, but a heritable trait that breeders have intensified generation over generation. Wild populations are found through much of the Amazon River basin, particularly in Guyana and Venezuela, with this specific red-dotted form tracing back to the Essequibo River drainage.
Feeding & Care Tip: An omnivore in the wild, this species does well on high-quality flakes and pellets as a staple, but for ideal growth, color, and condition, feed regularly with frozen bloodworm, tubifex worm, and brine shrimp alongside a spirulina-based food for plant matter. Feed small portions multiple times throughout the day rather than one large feeding.
Provide a tall, spacious aquarium — angelfish are tall-bodied fish and need vertical swimming room as much as floor space — of at least 55 gallons for adults. Décor of broad-leafed plants, driftwood, and rocks gives this species both cover and the kind of vertical surfaces it will use for spawning. Maintain a temperature of 76–82°F and a pH of 6.0–7.5, leaning toward the softer, more acidic end for the best long-term color and breeding success, since this is still a wild-type fish closer to its natural Amazonian water chemistry than heavily domesticated angelfish strains.
Wild-form angelfish like this one tend to be somewhat more docile than many domestic strains and rarely bother tankmates outside of breeding season, but they will still predate on fish small enough to fit in their mouth — avoid housing with nano fish, shrimp, or anything that could be mistaken for food. Good tankmates include mid-sized tetras, Corydoras, and other peaceful, similarly-sized community fish.

| Minimum Tank Size | 55 gallons, tall profile preferred |
| Ideal Temp | 76–82°F (24–28°C) |
| Ideal pH | 6.0–7.5, leaning soft/acidic for best color and breeding |
| Plant Safe | Yes |
| Staple Food | High-quality flakes and pellets |
| Treat / Supplement | Frozen bloodworm, tubifex worm, brine shrimp, spirulina-based food |
| Origin | Essequibo River, Guyana (wild-form color morph; also found in the wider Amazon basin) |
