Galapagos Cholla Wood is the hollow, naturally-perforated skeleton of the cholla cactus — a shrimp-keeper's favorite. Its open, lattice-like tubes are riddled with holes that baby shrimp hide in and that quickly grow the biofilm shrimp graze on, making it both shelter and food source in one. It also slowly releases beneficial tannins and softens water as it breaks down. Available in 6 in and 12 in pieces.
Great for Shrimp: Cholla is almost synonymous with shrimp keeping — the hollow tubes are perfect shrimplet hideouts, and as the wood slowly decomposes it becomes a biofilm buffet that an entire colony grazes. It's soft enough that plecos and shrimp rasp at it too, and a great anchor for moss or Bucephalandra.
Preparation: New driftwood leaches tannins that tint the water a natural tea color (harmless, and many aquascapers love the blackwater look). To reduce it, soak the wood for a few days to a couple of weeks, changing the water, before adding it. Most woods need weighting or anchoring until waterlogged enough to sink. (Cholla is light and may need weighting until it sinks; it breaks down over months, which is normal and beneficial in a shrimp tank.)
