Cryptocoryne usteriana
- Low stock - 1 item left
Cryptocoryne usteriana is one of the largest Cryptocoryne species, native to the Philippines and producing long, broad, deeply rippled green to brownish leaves that can reach 12 to 24 inches in height. The heavily undulating leaf surface and the impressive length of the mature leaves create a dramatic, sweeping background plant of exceptional natural presence — a Cryptocoryne that brings genuine large-scale impact to planted aquariums with adequate space.
Care tip: Cryptocoryne usteriana may experience some leaf melt when first introduced to a new aquarium — this is a normal acclimation response and the plant will recover fully once established. A nutrient-rich substrate and stable water parameters minimize this response and support the best long-term growth.
Like all Cryptocoryne, usteriana is a rhizome-rooted rosette plant that benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and stable water conditions. Its large leaf size means it benefits more than most Crypts from regular root feeding through tabs or enriched substrate. Initial leaf melt upon introduction is possible and normal; once established the plant grows vigorously and holds its position reliably for years. It is one of the longest-lived aquarium plants when given appropriate care.
Cryptocoryne usteriana is an easy plant that requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows well under low lighting — a remarkable combination of large size and minimal care demands. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. The Philippine origin of this species means it is adapted to a range of tropical freshwater conditions.
In the aquascape, Cryptocoryne usteriana is a natural background plant for medium to large aquariums where its sweeping, rippled leaves create bold vertical and horizontal lines. The deeply undulating leaf surface creates exceptional visual texture, and the large leaf mass provides natural shelter and territorial definition for fish. It is most impressive as a specimen plant given adequate space to develop its full rosette.
Cryptocoryne usteriana is a magnificent, large-scale Cryptocoryne for aquarists who appreciate the dramatic end of the genus. Its impressive size, deeply rippled leaves, and minimal care requirements make it one of the most rewarding large Cryptocoryne species in the hobby.
