Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King'
Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King'
Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King' is a prized collector cultivar that takes its dramatic name from the intricate, skeleton-like venation visible across its dark, elongated leaves. The fine pale veining stands in striking contrast to the deep green base of each leaf, creating a botanical pattern of exceptional beauty that rewards close inspection. With reddish stems adding further visual interest, Skeleton King is one of the most visually compelling Bucephalandra cultivars in the planted aquarium hobby.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King' can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra, Skeleton King originates from the fast-flowing rivers of Borneo, Indonesia, where it grows attached to rocks and submerged wood. In the aquarium, it can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood or stone at any height in the tank. Never fully bury the rhizome, as this will cause rot. One of the most endearing qualities of all Bucephalandra is their ability to produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline, and Skeleton King is no exception to this charming trait.
This variety grows to 2 to 4 inches and thrives in low to moderate lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation, though CO₂ addition and regular liquid fertilization will enrich the leaf color and encourage steadier growth. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 suit this plant well. Growth is slow and deliberate — patience is rewarded with a long-lived, dramatic specimen that holds its shape in the aquascape for years.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King' excels as a foreground to midground accent where the intricate leaf venation can be admired up close. Its dark, detailed leaves create exceptional contrast against fine mosses, pale substrate, and lighter-colored hardscape. In nano tanks it commands immediate attention; in larger aquascapes it rewards careful placement on a featured piece of driftwood or stone.
For the collector and serious aquascaper alike, Bucephalandra Kishii 'Skeleton King' is a gem. Its botanical drama, legendary ease of care, and slow-growing reliability make it a regal and lasting addition to any planted aquarium.
