Bucephalandra Gigantea
Bucephalandra Gigantea
Bucephalandra Gigantea stands out in the genus as a larger, faster-growing variety that reaches 2 to 4 inches with a more robust growth rate than the typical slow-growing Bucephalandra. This relative vigor makes it one of the more practical Bucephalandra choices for aquarists who want the beauty of the genus combined with a more dynamic, visually developing plant that rewards regular observation with visible progress.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Gigantea can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, Gigantea can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to wood or rock at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. It is rated moderate in difficulty and benefits from medium lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 suit this variety well. Like all Bucephalandra, Gigantea can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
The faster growth rate of Gigantea compared to most Bucephalandra means it fills in and develops its mounted display more quickly, creating a more established, lush appearance in a shorter timeframe. Regular liquid fertilization supports the more vigorous leaf production of this variety.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Gigantea is well positioned as a foreground to midground feature plant on substantial pieces of driftwood or rock where its larger size and more vigorous growth can develop into a genuinely impressive specimen. It pairs well with smaller, more compact Bucephalandra varieties that provide fine detail around its larger growth.
Bucephalandra Gigantea is the practical collector's choice — the Bucephalandra that offers the beauty and character of the genus with enough growth rate to keep the aquascape dynamic and evolving.
