Bucephalandra Giant Velvet
Bucephalandra Giant Velvet
Bucephalandra Giant Velvet combines two of the most desirable qualities in the genus — substantial leaf size and a luxurious, velvety deep green surface texture. The broader, larger leaves display a subtle shimmer beneath their soft, velvet-like surface, and the sturdy, wood-like rhizome gives the plant a mature, established character that smaller Bucephalandra varieties cannot achieve.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Giant Velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Giant Velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. Its velvety leaf surface is particularly attractive to shrimp, which graze enthusiastically on the biofilm that develops in the fine texture of the leaves. Like all Bucephalandra, it can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Giant Velvet grows to 2 to 4 inches and thrives in low to moderate lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 are ideal. The sturdy rhizome and broader leaves benefit from regular liquid fertilization to support consistent, healthy growth.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Giant Velvet excels as a foreground feature plant or a bold accent attached to prominent hardscape. Its larger leaf size and velvety texture create visual depth and luxury in any composition. The deep green color and subtle shimmer pair beautifully with fine-textured mosses and smooth-leaved plants. This is a plant that looks more impressive the more closely it is examined.
Bucephalandra Giant Velvet is a standout variety for aquarists who want the substance and visual weight of a larger plant combined with the refinement and detail that only Bucephalandra can provide.
