Bettas are living animals and each one is unique; color intensity, pattern, and fin development vary naturally from fish to fish. To choose your exact fish, see our WYSIWYG program below.

Coccina Betta (Betta coccina), often called the Wine Red Betta, is a small wild betta from the peat swamp forests of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, first described by Jörg Vierke in 1979. Its body is a deep, iridescent wine red to dark red-brown, with blue-green highlights on the fins and striking blue eyes. Males are the more vivid of the pair, with longer fins and richer color. Females are slightly smaller, with shorter fins and a softer red-brown tone. In the right conditions, a pair of Coccina is one of the most beautiful and natural-looking wild betta displays you can keep.

⚠ Advanced Care — Blackwater Species: Coccina Bettas need very soft, very acidic blackwater (pH 4.0–6.0, GH 0–4 dGH), and they need it kept steady. Hard or alkaline water causes ongoing stress, washed-out color and disease. Peat filtration, Indian almond leaves and blackwater extract are part of the basic setup, not extras. This is not a beginner fish. Test your water regularly and make any changes slowly.

Select Your Exact Fish — WYSIWYG: Each betta is individually filmed in their container and video previews are available. Browse the videos, find the fish you want, note the container number in the bottom right corner, place your order, and include that number in your order notes. You will receive exactly that fish — not one like it.

In the wild, Coccina live in shaded, slow-moving swamp water stained the color of tea by fallen leaves, over a bottom of thick leaf litter. The water is extremely soft and acidic, with almost no current. Their habitat is being lost to deforestation and conversion to plantations, and the species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. That makes well-kept, breeding aquarium populations increasingly valuable.

Recreate those conditions and the fish will reward you. A 10-gallon or larger species tank works well, with dim lighting, a dark substrate covered in leaf litter, floating plants, and plenty of hiding places among wood and plants. Keep water movement to a minimum — a gentle sponge filter is ideal. Coccina are shy at first and will spend more time in the open, with better color, once they feel secure. Keep a tight-fitting lid: wild bettas jump, and a small gap is enough for an escape.

Feeding & Care Tip: Wild bettas are insect hunters, and live or frozen foods are their ideal diet. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp make excellent daily staples. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily, and supplement 2–3 times per week with Hikari Frozen Daphnia. Some individuals learn to accept small pellets over time, but live and frozen foods bring out the best color and condition.

When moving your betta to a new aquarium, add Seachem Betta Basics to the water — it neutralizes chlorine and chloramines and provides a slime coat supplement to ease the stress of transition. Use it at every water change.

Indian almond leaves (Catappa) are essential for wild bettas, not merely beneficial. The tannins they release acidify the water, replicate natural blackwater chemistry, provide mild antibacterial and antifungal properties, and create the dim, tea-stained water in which Coccina are most comfortable and show their best coloration. Use generously and replace monthly.

Coccina Bettas are bubble nesters. The male builds a small nest of bubbles at the surface, often tucked under a floating leaf or among plants. After spawning he places the eggs in the nest and guards them until the fry hatch and become free-swimming. Coccina are best kept as a bonded pair. In a larger, heavily planted tank they can also be kept as a small mixed group, where they will choose their own partners. Males become territorial while nesting, so give each pair room and plenty of cover. Spawns are small, and the fry need infusoria or micro-foods before moving on to baby brine shrimp.

Our wild bettas are kept in individual filtered, heated, and UV-sterilized homes — each fish with its own stable, carefully maintained water environment. Wild bettas are more sensitive to water quality than domesticated varieties and are maintained accordingly.

Wild bettas should be kept as species-only — they are not suitable community fish. Their water needs are far more specialized than those of typical community fish, and the shy Coccina is easily stressed or outcompeted at feeding time by more active tankmates. A dedicated species aquarium gives them the stable, quiet environment they require and lets their natural behavior be seen in full.

Coccina Betta

Difficulty

Advanced — experienced wild betta keepers only

Temperament

Peaceful but shy; males territorial when nesting — species only

Adult Size

2.0–2.2 inches (5–5.6 cm)

Group Size

Bonded pair (1:1), or a small mixed group in a larger planted tank

Minimum Tank Size

10 gallons for a pair

Ideal Temperature

75–82°F (24–28°C)

Ideal pH

4.0–6.0

Ideal GH

0–4 dGH

Ideal KH

0–2 dKH

Staple Food

Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms; Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp

Treat / Supplement

Hikari Frozen Daphnia

Lifespan

3–5 years

Origin

Peat swamp forests of Sumatra (Indonesia) and Peninsular Malaysia

Notes

Housing: Species-only — not suitable for community aquariums
Indian Almond Leaves: Essential — use generously
Breeding: Bubble nester — male builds and guards nest; small spawns; fry need micro-foods first
Lid: Tight-fitting lid required — wild bettas jump
New Tank: Seachem Betta Basics at setup and every water change
Conservation: IUCN Vulnerable — habitat loss in the wild
Water: Extreme blackwater essential
